(oh wow, I'm getting an "you are doing that too much. Where it pertains to editing id Tech 4 maps, CSG applies only to brushes with just two possible operations: boolean union and difference. Don't get me wrong Pro-builder is great for a lot of things, but when you want to build levels and iterate quickly you don't want to work on the triangle and vertex level.ĬSG also has the added benefit that, since you're working with solids, you never have to worry about having cracks in your geometry. Tools like Pro-builder try to be sort of Maya-lite, but within Unity. Blender primarily a surface mesh editor, but capable of simple CSG using meta objects and using the Boolean modifier on mesh objects. This allows you to make a lot of relatively complicated shapes in a surprisingly easy and intuitive way. TrenchBroom (or TrenchBroom 2, or TB) is a free open-source cross-platform 3D level editor with modernized Quake-style brush-based construction and ongoing. You basically add or subtract brushes from each other, or do an intersect operation which leaves you with the area both brushes have in common. ĬSG like tools work with simple shapes that are combined to make more complicated shapes using CSG operations. So you want to start rough and not with too many details & want to be able to make big sweeping changes easily. When you want to design a level, you want to iterate a lot and focus on gameplay first, pretty later.
